The Centroid is offering a two-part web mapping workshop, Feb. 1st and Feb. 8th.

Learn the fundamentals of web mapping with web developer David Puckett of Bright Rain Solutions in two Friday afternoon sessions.  Geared towards students, but all are welcome.  Some GIS experience is necessary.

This is a special opportunity to learn web mapping and development skills, which are not covered in the CSU geospatial curriculum.

Sign up for one or both sessions.

Session 1, Web mapping basics and platforms

Friday, Feb. 1st, 1:30 – 4:00pm (Morgan Library Rm 174)

There are many options when it comes to getting your spatial data on the web, including platforms outside the traditional GIS space. This hands-on workshop will be an exploration of various web mapping platforms using readily available open data sources.

Come with questions and curiosity and leave with an understanding of options for putting your data on a map available to the wider world in a browser. There will also be a gentle introduction to custom web mapping applications, as an invitation to join Session 2, that will dive a little deeper into building custom, web map applications.

Session 2, Customizing web maps with Javascript

Friday, Feb. 8th, 1:00- 4:00pm (Morgan Library Rm 173)

As a follow up to the exploration of web mapping platforms in Session 1, we will wade into the world of custom web map development. This is a hands-on workshop that will introduce you, at a high level, to the various components that make up custom web maps.

Meant for the web beginner, come with curiosity and a willingness to explore. Session 1 or equivalent experience is strongly recommended.

You will gain an understanding of what it takes to build your own web mapping application along with resources for further exploration. It is an opportunity for you to spend time with professional developers, ask questions and walk away with (at least one) application that you’ve built yourself (!).
