Dominic Austin | Undergraduate Intern

Dominic, from Anchorage, Alaska, is a Junior studying Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology with a minor in GIS for Natural Resources. After an early exposure to GIS shifted his course to include the GIS minor, Dominic developed a passion for combining geospatial analysis with fish and wildlife conservation and biology. With prior drone operation and surveying experience, he has thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills in geospatial software and Python coding for GIS. Outside his work at the Centroid, Dominic is mapping spatial distribution trends in Mallard USGS Band recoveries in the central migratory flyway, and mapping the history of Cutthroat Trout restoration in Colorado in partnership with CPW. When he’s not studying or working on GIS projects, Dominic spends much of his free time rock climbing, trail running, fly fishing, hunting, and going on adventures with his roommates.

Gavin Hawkes | Undergraduate Intern

Gavin is a Undergrad Computer Science major at CSU. His area of interests are Big Data, Parallel Processing, and Distributed Systems. His work with the Centroid is focused on the application of machine learning to remotely sensed data, the data management and optimization of those processes, and using data visualization to make information accessible to all.

Addie Cravens | Undergraduate Intern

Addie is a senior in Wildlife Biology pursuing minors in GIS and Forestry. She was hooked on
GIS a couple of years into her degree, and is excited about the ability to combine wildlife
management with geospatial tools and analysis. Recently, she discovered the usefulness of
Python coding and has been working to improve those skills and implement them into multiple
projects. Her last two summers were spent working as a field technician with CPW monitoring
snowshoe hare and lynx populations, and hopes to combine both field and geospatial aspects
into a Master’s and career. Outside of CSU, she can usually be found on road trips off-roading
in the Colorado mountains, out exploring canyon country, or at home experimenting with
sourdough.

Riley_Nelson

Riley Nelson | Undergraduate Intern

 Riley is a second-degree student, currently completing her senior year in Computer Science. She holds a previous degree in Elementary Education and spent seven years teaching in classrooms and outdoor education programs before returning to CSU to further pursue her passions. Riley’s academic and professional interests lie at the intersection of computer science, GIS, education, and environmental science. She is particularly motivated by opportunities to combine technology with real-world problem-solving and accessibility, drawing on her teaching experience to bridge complex concepts for diverse audiences. Outside of academics, Riley thrives in the outdoors and enjoys backpacking, whitewater rafting, snowboarding, and hiking. She also loves playing board games, cooking, and spending time with her partner, their dog Obi, and their cat Luna.

Violet sparks | Undergraduate Intern

Violet is a senior studying Natural Resource Management and Integrated Visual Studies. She
loves how GIS can connect people with the outdoors and make science and data more
accessible through visuals. As a visual person, she’s especially interested in cartography and
design, and enjoys combining her art and natural resource backgrounds through GIS. Since
joining the Centroid, Violet has created icons that will be integrated into an Outdoor Recreation
Asset map through CSU Extension, which she is super excited about! Outside of the Centroid,
Violet loves rock climbing, skiing, and printmaking.

Cy Spears | Graduate Intern

Cy is a first-year master’s student in the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology at Colorado State University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Geospatial Science from Missouri State University, where he also completed two GIS certifications. Before beginning graduate school, Cy spent two years working in the utility-scale renewable energy construction industry, where he trained teams in the use of GIS for data collection, visualization, and spatial analysis to support informed decision-making in the field.

Bronson Griswold | Undergraduate Intern

Bronson Griswold is a Geography major at Colorado State University, minoring in GIS and Data Science. He is passionate about applying spatial analysis and technology to understand human–environment relationships. At the Geospatial Centroid, Bronson supports mapping and data projects while expanding his skills in geospatial problem-solving. Outside of the Centroid, he enjoys playing both indoor and sand volleyball.

Rose Parham | Graduate Intern

Rose Parham recently finished her MS with the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology, where she worked on a collaborative conservation project assessing watershed health with a community organization in highland Ecuador. She earned her undergraduate degree in Ecology and Anthropology from the University of Georgia and worked doing botany and forest ecology field work for several years before starting her graduate education. Rose is excited about the use of GIS in answering landscape scale ecological questions, as well as its ability to learn about, communicate with, and better serve local communities. Outside of work, you can find Rose mountain and gravel biking, running, working on her garden, playing piano and guitar, and (slowly) learning how to backcountry ski.

Oliver Smock | Undergraduate Intern

Oliver is an undergraduate transfer student from Colorado Mountain College currently pursuing a degree in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability with a minor in Watershed Science. He realized through taking a course in GIS, that spatial analysis and communication of spatial data is vitally important to conservation of our ecosystems. Over summers he likes to hold seasonal positions with land management or nonprofit agencies like Mile High Youth Corps, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Aspen Global Change Institute. When not working or attending school Oliver can be found hiking, climbing, backpacking, or volunteering.

Gretchen Hansten | Graduate Intern

Gretchen Hansten is a second-year student in the Master of Public Health program at the Colorado School of Public Health at Colorado State University with a concentration in One Health. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Idaho in Animal & Veterinary Sciences, and stayed in the community after graduation to work for the local hospital system in acute and primary care settings.  With her background in agriculture and work experience in healthcare, Gretchen is working on projects to map behavioral health resources for agricultural and rural communities for the Colorado AgrAbility Project. In her free time, you’ll find Gretchen skiing, running, doing yoga, reading, and improving her photography skills.

Kasper is a senior majoring in Ecosystem Science and Sustainability. They are looking to pursue a career in data science to better manage natural resources and understand human-environment conflict. They have a passion for open source data and bridging the gap between scientists and the general population. In their free time, they enjoy ultimate frisbee, hockey, and reading.
